Billy J. Cunningham is a passionate and visionary educational leader with over 24 years of service in public education, ranging from classroom instruction to district-wide leadership. Known for his dynamic presence, sharp intellect, and commitment to equity, Mr. Cunningham currently serves as the Superintendent of Schools for the Edgewater School District in Edgewater, New Jersey.
Throughout his career, Mr. Cunningham has held progressively responsible roles in diverse communities, earning a reputation for driving innovation, fostering collaboration, and building school cultures rooted in trust, excellence, and inclusivity. Prior to his appointment as Superintendent, he served as Principal and Interim Director of Special Services at George Washington School (Pre-K to 2nd Grade), where he successfully led the district through the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic with agility, compassion, and clarity. His strategic leadership has contributed to a 98% staff retention rate over two consecutive years—evidence of his ability to cultivate supportive and high-performing environments.
Before joining the Edgewater community, Mr. Cunningham held key leadership positions in the Hawthorne, Rutherford, and Jersey City Public School Districts, including Principal of Hawthorne High School and Assistant Principal of Rutherford High School. His work has consistently focused on student-centered decision-making, innovative instructional practices, and equity-driven policy reform. From pioneering district-wide professional development models and one-to-one technology programs to overseeing multimillion-dollar grant initiatives, he has combined operational excellence with a clear moral purpose.
Mr. Cunningham attended the University of New Haven and New Jersey City University, Mr. Cunningham holds a B.A. in History with a minor in Political Science, an M.A. in Special Education, and an M.A. in Urban Education with a focus in Administration and Supervision. He is also certified as a School Safety Specialist and serves as the district’s Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying (HIB) Coordinator.
Known for his diplomacy, relentless attention to detail, and natural ability to connect with diverse audiences, Mr. Cunningham leads with both head and heart. He believes that public education is the cornerstone of our democracy and that schools thrive when they are inclusive, innovative, and anchored in strong community partnerships.
As Superintendent, Mr. Cunningham remains deeply committed to ensuring that every student in Edgewater receives a high-quality, equitable education that prepares them not only for academic success, but for life beyond the classroom.
