Students in year one gain the foundational skills that will carry them through the rest of the program:  journal article literacy, networking finesse, writer's workshop practice, team work strengthening, and research planning.    This is year of self reflection, as students question what they want to study, who they would like to study with and what their research experience will look like.   They are matched with a LABRATT 11th grader who is there to guide them through the process.   Students are expected to read 5 research articles, find a mentor, create their research plan and start the forms for our competitions.   10th grade students must compete at the Westlake research plan competition in June.
