Phaedrus Beyond the Classroom...
In Phaedrus, we value the motto "Learning For The Sake of Learning". This means that in Phaedrus we aren't just reading a textbook and receiving a lecture, we are going out into the real world and experiencing lessons on our own. The most prominent examples are weekly internships, community service and field trips!
Implemented since the begining, camping trips have been an important aspect of the a-school. Judy's intent was for the camping trips to give students a wilderness experience stressing survival skills.
Each semester, Phaedrites are required to complete two community service projects - a minimum of eight hours per year. Students are also expected to participate in a charity walk each semester - facilitating the Color Run fulfills the second semester requirement.
Field trips in Phaedrus align with our core value of learning through experience. We aim to go on 2-3 field trips per year, organized primarily by students. In the 2022-2023 school year, we visited Project USE, a wilderness team building experience, and Grand Central Terminal and Central Park in New York City, in order to learn more about the history of where we live. In the 2023-2024 school year, we will be going on an overnight camping trip at Project USE and seeing The Great Gatsby on Broadway after reading the novel in class. All of our incredible opportunities away from campus truly enhance each student’s Phaedrus experience.
"As a junior, I co-planned and led our New York City field trip with Hannah Cohen. After nearly two months of meetings, organizing, and scheduling, the trip was both very successful and productive. The opportunity to take charge and put together a whole trip for my classmates was extremely fulfilling, and definitely not one that I would have had outside of the A-School." - Madison Glotzer (2022-2024)
