Our goal, as Spanish teachers at Edgemont Jr./Sr. High School, is to give our students the tools that they need to travel, communicate with, understand and eventually assimilate into a Spanish-speaking culture. We aim to couple an in-depth study of the mechanics of the language with an appreciation of the culture. We strive to implement technology into our lessons in an effort to make our courses relevant, fun, current, creative and challenging. In addition to the acquisition of new vocabulary and grammar, we encourage our students to express themselves primarily in the target language through the use of circumlocution and other methods that avoid the use of English.
Sabrina Arevalo joined the Edgemont community in 2021 and is currently teaching Spanish 1B/8 and Spanish 1A/7. She is a native Spanish speaker and has had a passion for working with students since she herself was in high school. She studied her undergraduate and her masters at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY where she pushed for more multicultural experiences for all of the students. She was an Orientation Leader throughout her time at Hofstra and was able to help students that identify as Latinx/Latina/Latino/Hispanic adjust to the campus environment. She believes that learning a second language can create lifelong friendships and experiences that are unimaginable. It also creates a more natural and authentic experience when you travel outside of the US and go out into the world to make new memories.
