Spring classes begin in January and fall courses begin in August.

EMT Overview

The EMT course consists of 94 lecture hours, 99 lab hours, 32 online hours, and 48 hours of EMS field internship. Upon successful completion of the course, you will be eligible to take the North Carolina certification exam at the EMT level. After testing at the North Carolina level, applicants will be eligible to take the National Registry certification exam at the EMT level.

Credit Awarded

Upon receiving a credential from the NC Office of EMS or National Registry of EMT’s, you can receive credit towards an Associate Degree in Applied Science: Emergency Medical Science. You can request information for details in entering that program and obtaining your degree by contacting the EMS Program Director.

Prerequisites

The following criteria must be met prior to entering the EMT Program. Students should submit all of the information listed below prior to registering for the class. Registration will not be allowed without fulfilling each prerequisite. The applicant MUST:

  • Be at least 17 years of age. High School students who are under 18 years of age may have to complete a minor release form.

  • Complete the current reading and writing assessment test and score basic reading comprehension at the eleventh grade level. (Students producing a high school or college transcript illustrating successful completion of an English course beyond the eleventh grade level are exempt from the reading and writing assessments.)

  • Submit a Continuing Education Registration Form. This form will be emailed to you after the application is accepted.

  • Pay the continuing education registration fee. Current fee is $180. (Fee exemptions apply to individuals affiliated with qualified agencies/organizations. Please see the EMS Program Director to find out if you qualify. If fee exempt, the student must provide an exemption letter from the Agency Director stating that they are an active member. That letter must be presented to ECC at the time of registration.)

  • Pay ECC the accident insurance fee of $6.00.

  • Pay ECC the medical liability insurance fee of $8.50.

Requirements - Testing/Labs

The student is required to purchase the ECC EMS Polo in order to attend class, labs, and EMS field rotations. The cost for the shirt is $25.00 and must be purchased during the first week of class. Instructions on how to order will be provided by the Lead Instructor once the class has started.

EMS Testing account for course testing purposes. Students will be given an access code during the second week of class. The cost is $30.00

The student must purchase Sterling Credentials for $98.00. This program is utilized for skill tracking in labs.

Requirements - EMS Field Time

ECC does not guarantee the admission of any student to an EMS field site. A student’s acceptance, participation, and continuation at any field site is subject to the approval and consent of the field site. Students must be able to attend and progress in the assigned field area for each course. Alternate assignments will not be made because of inability to progress in an assigned field setting.

Background Check: Prior to the start of the field rotation, students may be required to obtain a copy of their criminal background record and provide it to the field site.

Breakdown of Course Fees

Registration Fee: $180.00

  • Due the same day as registration.

  • Registration must be completed before the first day of class.

  • This fee may be waived for those affiliated with an eligible EMS agency in the state of North Carolina. You must show proof with a letter from the agency.

  • This fee is paid once.

Medical Liability Insurance Fee: $8.50

  • Due the same day as registration.

  • This is a one-time fee for a $1,000,000 insurance policy.

  • This insurance is provided to help cover students in the case of medical errors or omissions.

  • All students are required to have this insurance coverage.

Accident Insurance Fee: $6.00

  • Due the same day as registration.

  • This is a one-time fee.

  • This insurance is provided to help cover students in the case of an accident.

  • All students are required to have this insurance coverage.

CPR Card Fee: $7.00

  • Due once you complete the CPR portion.

  • This is a one-time fee for the actual CPR card.

Books: Price available at the campus bookstore.

  • Emergency Care, 13th edition.

  • Available at the campus bookstore.

  • Must be ordered before the first day of class.

EMS Polo Shirt: $25.00

  • Must be purchased the first class meeting.

  • Must be worn to all classes, labs, and field rotations.

Student Badge: No Cost

  • Available at either campus.

  • Must possess prior to conducting field rotations.

  • Must be worn to all field sites.
