Everyday your child will be engaged in read alouds to foster social emotional skills, background knowledge and modeled fluent reading. We also encourage nightly reading activities which will count towards IRLA steps.
Phonics
We follow the Skills Program to present phonics skills. These are the foundational skills to reading. Students will participate in whole group Heggerty instruction as well. Letter cards will be sent home for you to practice working with your child on letter names and sounds.
Power Words
There are 57 1G and 30 2G for Kindergarten. These words are memorized so that when students see them, they can read them automatically. As the year progresses, we will send home lists of these words to practice.
IRLA
Steps
An IRLA log sheet will be sent home for students to track the number of steps they read at home. Every 15 minutes you and your child read together will count as one step. It is recommended that students read for 30 minutes (2 steps) each night. When you sign the log, please write the date and circle the house for the number of steps read that night. It is not per book!
Medals
For every 100 steps students complete between home and school, they will earn a medal from our school to celebrate their reading accomplishments!
BookShelf
This app allows your child to have access to IRLA leveled books for each color of the program. Most students will be starting Kindergarten with the yellow books. We will be showing students how to use this app at school in the coming weeks.
