IRLA is a formative assessment tool within the "ARC" (American Reading Company) reading program, designed to pinpoint a student's current reading level and identify the specific skills they need to develop next to accelerate their reading growth across all grade levels, from K-12; essentially, it helps teachers understand where each student is in their reading journey and tailor instruction accordingly.
As part of our IRLA reading program, your child will be expected to engage in 30 minutes of independent reading each day at school, and 15 to 30 minutes per night at home as well. The goal of this initiative is to not only enhance your child’s fluency and word attack skills, but to boost your child’s confidence and help him or her discover the joy and excitement that literature can offer! You will log your child's reading in their reading log which can be found in their take-home folder.

There are lists of IRLA Power Words that we will cover in first grade. It will span the various levels of the IRLA system: 1 Green, 2 Green, 1Blue, 2 Blue and 1 Red.
The initial benchmark for the start of first grade is 55 or more 1Green Power Words from Kindergarten and 40 or more 2 Green Power Words from Kindergarten.
To help make practice more manageable for you and your child, we have broken each of these lists down into chunks of 10 words.
At the beginning of each week, your child will receive a list of 10 Power Words that we will be focusing on during that week of school.
Please plan to set aside five to ten minutes for practicing these words on a nightly basis. This counts as IRLA steps!
