Success Under Pressure
Exams can be a challenging time for students and families. Our aim is to ensure you feel prepared, confident, and supported as you work toward your goals. Success isn't just about what happens in the exam hall; it’s about the habits, health, and mindset you build along the way.
From practical study strategies and revision timetables to advice on managing stress and maintaining a healthy balance, we have gathered some tools to help you perform your best.
Don't try to do everything at once. Pick two or three of these methods to build into your routine, and remember to look after your wellbeing!
Stop passively reading and start testing yourself. Forcing your brain to retrieve information strengthens memory retention.
Use flashcard apps like Anki or Quizlet.
Close your textbook and write down everything you can remember.
Regularly complete self-quizzes.
Review material at increasing intervals (e.g., after one day, three days, then a week) rather than cramming last minute.
Schedule short, regular review sessions.
Focus heavily on your weaker areas.
Keep focus sharp and avoid burnout by breaking your time into manageable chunks.
Study intensely for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break.
After four cycles, take a longer 15-30 minute break to stretch or hydrate.
Visualise complex subjects by map-making. It engages both the creative and analytical sides of your brain.
Start with a central topic and branch out into subtopics.
Use colours, symbols, and arrows to connect related ideas.
Turn passive reading into active learning when tackling heavy textbooks.
Survey: Scan the text for key points.
Question: Ask what you need to learn from it.
Read: Read actively with purpose.
Recite: Recall the main ideas from memory.
Review: Regularly revisit the material.
Instead of focusing on one topic for hours, switch between different subjects or problem types during a single session.
E.g. mix maths revision with history flashcards.
Alternate between essay writing and problem-solving to boost adaptability.
Practising with real, timed past papers is the ultimate way to prepare for the big day.
Familiarise yourself with the exam format and question styles.
Practise under strict exam conditions to build confidence and reduce anxiety.
Your brain cannot perform without the right fuel. Academic success relies heavily on your physical wellbeing.
Sleep: Aim for 7 - 9 hours a night to lock in memory.
Nutrition: Eat brain foods like nuts, fish, and green veg.
Hydration & Movement: Stay hydrated and take regular walks to lower stress.
