Language acquisition: GERMAN

German overview

This is the introduction of the MYP German language course. The students will develop skills in speaking, reading, writing and listening at a beginner level. Students will interact in simple social exchanges and structured learning situations, discriminate sound combinations, recognise questions and statements respond to and imitate models of speech including intonation, rhythm and pronunciation. The elements learnt will provide them with a strong foundation for continued success in the acquisition and use of the language. They will also begin to explore the distinctive elements of contemporary German culture and to make comparisons with their Australian experience.

German is one of the major world languages and with 100 million native speakers, is the most spoken language within the European Union. It is estimated that 15.4 million people around the world are learning German. It is a significant language for business, politics, science, engineering, culture, and sport. Learning German is on the rise across many countries and is taught in many schools across Australia.
