Dear Kaleen Community,

Welcome to the halfway mark of Term 4! We are midway through a busy term of learning and are loving every minute of it. Please read on to hear about the happenings in and around the school.

NAIDOC Week

This week we held our NAIDOC Week celebrations. The school came together to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Our Cultural Integrity team, staff and students organised a number of key events and learning opportunities. In the lead up to NAIDOC week, we held a poster competition and received entries from almost every student in the school. Adam Shipp (from YURBAY) came out to teach our students and teachers about knowing, understanding and caring for country. Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students learnt about local native plants within our school grounds and how many of these were used to make tools, food and medicine. The students then created short videos to share their learnings with the rest of the school, and organised a scavenger hunt involving these plants. Each of the plants had QR codes attached to them and students used these (and iPads) to watch videos of their classmates talking about how the plants were used.

On Monday, we held a flag raising ceremony, as we now have the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags flown at the front of school. Thank you to Mekhi O, Kahlin G, Ellie H, Sienna C and Julie B for sharing their reflections and to Nick W and Jasmine V our school captains for supporting on the day. Ayvah O led the school in our acknowledgement of country using the words put together by our preschool students.

We at Kaleen Primary School, would like to say thank you, to the Ngunnawal people, for letting us share your land. We promise to look after it, the animals and the people too.

Congratulations to all our poster competition winners and to all our students who submitted entries. Thank you to everyone for your contributions to a very successful NAIDOC Week.

Classes for 2021

The process of allocating children to classes for 2021 has started.

The allocations are based on the following considerations:

· Friendships

· Learning dispositions

· Behavioural considerations

· Personalities

As part of the process of allocating students to classes, the children are given the opportunity to nominate 5 friends with whom they would like to share a class next year. They are guaranteed to have at least one of these friends with them in 2021. These nominations are based purely on friendship and not on any other factors and are the child’s decision to make. The ‘5 Friends’ lists will be completed by the children at a suitable time, in class, in the next two weeks. My firm belief is that teachers are in the best position to decide a child’s placement because they know all the children and how they function in a school environment. However, I invite parents to inform me of anything that they feel needs to be considered, for their own child’s well-being or development. I have allowed 2 weeks’ time in which to notify me of your concerns, in writing. All requests should be submitted through this Google Form link. After the cut-off date of Friday 27 November, it will not be possible to take further requests into account. Information also needs to be provided each year as circumstances can change. I will do my best to support your wishes but will not promise anything. Please be aware that requests for particular teachers cannot be accommodated on most occasions.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Bye for now,

Camping in

On Friday 6 November, Year 6 had their “Big Day Camping In”. The team from “Coastal Life Adventures” came from Tathra to coordinate the day, running archery, damper making, billy carts and team initiatives. The students had a fantastic time during the day, but the fun was not over, and they returned to school at 5:30 for a sleepover!

Hannah A- 6KT

Firstly Damper was my first activity, we went down behind the school and met Shannon, who helped us cook the damper, to make the dough, you mix together flour, salt, sugar and water, then you mix it to the right consistency, and lastly you then cook it over a nice controlled fire!

Then I went on to my next and favorite activity, Billy carts! Billy carts are old wooden vehicles that need to be pushed to move, We got the parts of the Billy carts and the tools to construct it, including washers, bolts, and nuts! After constructing the Billy Carts, we took turns to be pushed around in them as the driver steered. My favorite part of Billy carts was when we got Mrs Turner to sit in one and be pushed around. I really enjoyed the day and would definitely do it again if I could!

One of the other wonderful activities was archery. Located in the North-East corner of the oval, archery was a blast. We all lined up at four points and waited. We first were taught safety, this involved how to hold the arrow and how to shoot. When we started the arrows were missing but over time we got better. Someone even hit the yellow! Mrs Turner even managed to get a bullseye! The reason I didn’t was because my bow was broken, definitely not my lack of skill.

Team initiatives was another one of our activities. It revolved around working as a team. The first game was where everyone was on two planks, like giant skis, and had to lift up their legs for one side at the same time to lift the plant and go. My team got so desperate that we went horizontal! The next was when we had to throw balls into a bucket to get different amounts of points. Small balls got the points labelled on the bucket. The bigger balls get 10x more points. The final activity we did was where three people were in a line. One couldn’t see (front) one couldn’t hear (second) and the last couldn’t see. It was called “Three Wise Monkeys” The second person was facing the third person. They had to command each other. The goal was to reach a toy at the end. The person who couldn’t speak would make hand gestures, the person who couldn’t hear would shout to the person who couldn’t see so he could get it.

Overall, the experience was amazing and a blast!

Hi this is Holly and Samira, we’re going to be writing about our experience “Camping In” on Friday 6th of November. Because of Covid-19 Year Six has missed out on many exciting opportunities. But because of this tough time we were rewarded with a sleepover at school! When I arrived I remember the anticipation boiling within me, everyone was so happy and excited. To start the experience, we enjoyed some delicious pizza and cordial. We then played the most epic game of Mini Olympics where we divided into groups and competed in crazy challenges! I remember the thrill of scoring well in the Mini Olympics, I was insanely proud of my team. After being completely crazy and wild we settled down and prepared our beds. We all grabbed some milo or milk and a sweet cupcake and collapsed to watch a movie. We were eventually sent to bed, where we talked until lights out at 10:00. It was super hard to get to sleep due to the bright green exit sign glowing right above my head! That morning we were all exhausted. We ate toast, cereal, and milo, as we watched “The Simpsons”. We all left at 9:00 with a great big smile on our faces.

National Recycling Week 2020

This week was National Recycling Week and we have had some amazing projects happening in our school. Our biggest by far has been 10c Recycling Container Greenhouse Project where our students have been collecting 10c recycling containers for Kaleen to buy a greenhouse. Our students and families are amazing and we have seen so many bins filled with 10c recycling containers. It has been so great to see so many students bringing in 10c containers. What a great way to turn our waste in money. To date we have brought in 2165 containers to go towards our greenhouse. Yay! The classes that have brought in the most containers this week were 1KA who brought in 365 containers and 4SC who brought in 368 containers. Well done to these classes and to everyone for your support. Keep bringing them in

We will continue collection of 10c recycling containers for all of next week, so bring them in. Ask mum or dad to collect them from their work, get grandma, grandpa, aunts and uncles involved, ask your neighbours and friends to support a great cause and turn their waste into cash. We can’t wait to see who our next week’s winners will be. 10c recycling container promotion for KPS greenhouse

Worm Tea

Today you would have received a letter to purchase Kaleen Primary School’s Worm Tea. Our worm tea is freshly brewed from our very own KPS worms. Worm tea is a natural liquid fertilizer that helps boost plant growth and is made from soaking worm castings in water. Our students help to make the worm tea. At Kaleen we have a 100% organics recycling program. Any food waste is collected by our students during fruit break, recess and lunch times and added to our green organics bins. This bin is emptied into our worm farm where our worms digest the organic material and produce castings filled with nutrients and beneficial microbes. We then use the worm castings to make our amazing Worm Tea fertiliser. Steeping these castings in water. Instructions of use are on the bottle.

I just wanted to give a big congratulations to my son Jackson Tate from 6KT.

Jackson has been working very hard all year to be the best soccer player that he can be, you may have seen him out practicing his juggling at recess. Jackson has just been selected to play in the National Premier Youth League Under 13s for Gungahlin United Football Club in 2021. We are so proud and can't wait to watch him competing out on the field next year.
