WIN (What I Need) is an intervention and enrichment program embedded within the school timetable to support students’ learning and wellbeing needs. The program focuses on Literacy and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), with students participating in two Literacy lessons and two SEL lessons per week. The WIN program:
Uses student data to identify individual needs
Supports inclusive practices and differentiation
Builds student confidence, independence, and wellbeing
Complements core classroom learning
By combining Literacy and SEL, the WIN program ensures students are supported both academically and emotionally, enabling them to access learning and reach their potential.
The Literacy component of WIN supports students to strengthen core literacy skills required for success across all learning areas. Instruction is differentiated to address individual needs, with opportunities for intervention, consolidation, and extension.
Key focus areas include:
Reading comprehension and fluency
Vocabulary development and subject-specific language
Writing skills, including sentence structure, paragraphing, and text organisation
Spelling and grammar in context
Speaking and listening skills to support classroom participation
Literacy learning is informed by formative assessment and aligned with the Australian Curriculum (Version 9), supporting students to access curriculum content with increasing confidence and independence.
The SEL component of WIN explicitly teaches the skills students need to manage themselves, build positive relationships, and engage effectively in learning. Lessons are developmentally appropriate and often delivered through discussion, reflection, and practical, scenario-based activities.
Key focus areas include:
Self-awareness and emotional regulation
Stress management and help-seeking strategies
Goal setting and growth mindset
Positive relationships, respect, and empathy
Decision-making and responsible behaviour
SEL lessons align with the Personal and Social Capability of the Australian Curriculum and support student wellbeing, engagement, and readiness to learn.
