The ACT Education Directorate has partnered with Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) graphic design students to bring the initiative to life through a fresh, visual poster, bookmark and stickers.

The initiative highlights the ACT Government's commitment to connecting vocational education with community literacy programs.

As part of an industry placement through the graphic design course at CIT, my peer Jess and I were asked to design lively posters for the 2026 Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge. With creative freedom and a focus on Canberra, we landed on the idea of native animals taking part in the challenge, as it felt fun, inclusive, and engaging. I chose the platypus and the Corroboree frog for their iconic presence, pairing their personalities with a colourful illustrative style. I was Influenced by artists like Jon Klassen, wanting the final design to have a tactile, hand-crafted feel.

A part of the CIT Graphic Design Advanced Diploma is getting to take part in an industry placement. I had the pleasure of getting to be a part of the Education Directorate Communication & Engagement team for a few weeks and create some of the designs for this year's CMRC. My goal for the designs was to create something that was reminiscent of the books I loved to read when I was a kid, full of life and colour and texture. Cooper and I both chose to feature native Aussie wildlife so I selected a Galah, Kookaburra and Corroboree Frog, who are sitting in a big gum tree with what I call the 'Bush Library' tucked into its trunk. One of my favourite things about reading is the community it creates at libraries but also in the 'Little Free Libraries' that are scattered throughout the suburbs in the ACT. It is my hope that these designs will encourage kids to read outside and enjoy the beautiful place we get to call home.
