For more information please check the ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies Website.
Here you can see a lot of technical information regarding courses, units, packages and certificates. In Year 11 and Year 12 across Australia certification is managed by Boards of Senior Secondary Studies in each state and territory. The ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies (BSSS) sets policy and procedures for curriculum, course structure, assessment, reporting and certification for all public and private schools in the ACT.
Parents and students will learn more of the technical details over the next two years but what is most important is what you need to know now.
What you need to know now.
What you need to know now is dependent on students' college goals and what they intend to do after they leave college.
Do you want to do further study at CIT or in industry based training, or a trade?
Do you want an ATAR to gain entry to university?
Do you want to simply join the workforce?
If you want an ATAR to gain entry to university you need to select a Tertiary package, which means you must select at least 4 subjects (preferably 5) at Tertiary level. If you do not want an ATAR to gain entry to university students must choose five subjects at either Tertiary or Accredited level and use their Year 12 Certificate of Secondary Education
Selecting Subjects
At College you will study your subjects for many more hours than you do in High School. It is very important you choose subjects you enjoy and are interested in. Take subjects that will help you with the career goals you have. Take subjects you are good at to help you maximise your results. Some subjects are offered at multiple levels. Be realistic about the level you are attempting. Ask for advice if you are not sure.
Changing Subjects
Throughout your two years you can change subjects. Tertiary students must study at least three subjects for two years to achieve a major course in those subjects. Accredited students must study at least four subjects for one year to achieve a minor course in those subjects.
Please take advantage of the resources and opportunities provided by our transition program. Course Advice Night, our teachers and Transitions officer visiting high schools, the College website, and our Course Advice website are all there to help students transition easily to college and enrol in courses that fits their needs and goals. If you need more help, just ask.
