This elective will cover both the Year 9 and 10 PE curriculum and include a specialised unit addressing contemporary issues affecting young men, such as toxic masculinity and men’s mental health.

Students interested in joining BEARS must complete the application process. Successful applicants will experience PE in a competitive and inclusive environment. They will also have the chance to participate in extracurricular camps and excursions and engage in community-wide projects throughout the year. These activities include attending live sporting events (such as AFL/NRL), visiting Penrith White Water, participating in the City2Surf, and connecting with aged care and early childhood centres.

This elective will cover both the Year 9 and 10 PE curriculum. Further, the EMBERS program addresses key issues affecting women today, including body image, consent, safety, mental health, and reproductive rights. Students will investigate the social and political contexts that influence women’s autonomy and wellbeing, developing critical awareness and practical understanding of advocacy, empowerment, and equity.

Students interested in joining EMBERS must complete the application process. Successful applicants will take part in theory, physical activity, leadership and mentoring opportunities. Additionally, they will be able to participate in many extracurricular activities throughout the year. Such as interstate camps, where we will see live sporting events and visit places of significance for women, such as the Lillian Fowler Reserve. Further, they will participate in volunteer activities to give back to the community, such as aged care visits, day care activities and primary school reading. 

Approximate cost of $500 to participate in camps and other excursions.

Applications for EMBERS will open in Week 10 with an interview to follow (Term 4 Week 3). Successful applicants for this subject will be automatically enrolled in 2027.

This Unit is broken into 2 separate Semester units, Athlete Planning and Athlete Health would cover key sporting principles. Goal setting, Time Management, Coach feedback, training programs, physical health as well as researching important social sporting issues. This is to enable students to become better managers and decision makers regarding their own competing commitments.

Excursions will play an important role in this course, inspiring these young athletes and clarifying their goals and pathways needed to achieve them. These local excursion venues include Raiders HQ, GWS, Capitals, AIS, other schools (colleges) that we can visit within our own class line. There may also be an interstate trip that could merge the goals of both semester units.
