St. Joseph Mighty Learners Early Education Program
"In Early Childhood Services programs, young children participate as active learners within developmentally appropriate learning experiences and develop knowledge, skills and attitudes that lay the foundation for subsequent learning.
Pre-Kindergarten, as part of ECS programming, is intended for children who require additional supports prior to their Kindergarten year. Children who are eligible include those who are learning English as a second language, those who are gifted and talented, and those who are diagnosed with a mild/moderate/severe disability/delay."
Education Guide, Government of Alberta 2022
The Mighty Learners Early Education Program offers half day classes Monday through Thursday (8:15 a.m.-11:15 a.m. or 12:15 p.m.-3:15 p.m.) with the benefits of small class sizes and regular access to specialized support services. Our Early Education team is highly collaborative and includes teaching professionals and assistants, Speech/Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, Behaviour Specialist and Educational Psychologist. Of course, we consider our pre-k families to be critical team members. Fridays are dedicated to family support meeting invitations for celebrating Mighty Learners, reviewing individual program plans, discussing goals and strategies, learning how to extend support at home and keeping the home/school connection strong.
Eligibility is based on assessment and diagnosis by a health care provider. Children with severe delays in development can be between the ages of 2 years and 8 months and 4 years and 8 months old by September 1 of the year they are attending, as per Alberta Education criteria.
Our program also has room for "play partners" who do not have identified needs but serve as role models for their peers.
