“All of us are put in boxes by our family, by our religion, by our society, our moment in history, even our own bodies. Some people have the courage to break free” (Rocero, n.d., as cited in Sojatia, 2020).
To move outside of our comfort zone, we have chosen to explore and highlight various issues surrounding gender identity, in particular, the experience of youth who do not conform to their assigned sex and society’s view of heteronormativity. Together, in light of our course readings, we critically viewed the acclaimed film Girl, engaged in reflective dialogue, and conducted further research and analysis to gain a deeper and more meaningful understanding of gender identity and the implications and considerations for education.
In this blog you will find a short synopsis of the film; our reflections on issues surrounding gender identity, embedded power and privilege, and microaggressions as they appear in the film; and implications and consideration for education.
