Quest Labs are dynamic mini-expeditions where students join a small cohort for a year-long journey into real-world experiences that extend beyond their daily school routines. These labs immerse students in unfamiliar learning environments and challenge them to explore new disciplines and industries, igniting passions and helping them reflect on these experiences and visualize their futures as eco-literate, solution-oriented citizens.
Quest Lab trips will happen between October and May, each with a central theme. Students and teachers will keep this theme in mind as they travel around the city and interact with community partners and take part in Quest Lab activities. Upon returning to school, cohorts will debrief through discussions, writing prompts, and self reflection. Check out each cohort page for links to some of these reflections!
October: Quest 1
Quest 101
Quest Lab gives students time to explore who they are through the lens of an interest. As students head out on their first Quest Lab, they will focus on the logistics. How do we navigate public transit? How do we interact as a cohort? How do we interact with the community? What do I notice and wonder about myself today?
December: Quest 2
Infrastructure and Systems
On our second trip into the community we will focus on systems and infrastructure. By looking at the connections between built, social and natural environments ECS students have been examining systems in the classroom year after year. Moving into the real world we will see these interconnections in the community as we take part in workshops and activities.
January: In School
Mid Year Checkpoint
(No Trips)
Cohorts will meet to check in on the progress of their Quest Lab year.
February: Quest 3
Career Connections
Quest Lab gets us out into the community, interacting with local businesses. As we connect with these professionals, they share with our students their pathways of building a passion to a career. Students gain insight into how an interest they have now could grow into a career and what skills they need to develop in high school and beyond to be successful.
February or March:
Quest 4
Connection to the Community
At ECS we are committed to community. We value the idea that interdisciplinary connections grow thinkers that can navigate uncertainty and complexity. Through Quest Lab we not only interact with community partners, but we examine how these partners fit into the greater community. We pay attention to our community spaces/places and make individual choices that reflect how we care for each other and the planet.
March or April:
Quest 5
Empathy: Connection to Self
Students gain insight into multiple perspectives when Quest Lab cohorts, teachers, and community leaders interact with each other. Understanding the experiences, perspectives, and needs of people around you is key to success in any field. Students practice navigating relationships with generosity and patience as they face challenges in the real world.
In May, all of 8th grade will go on the final Quest Lab together. On this day, students will give back to the ECS community by leading an activity at the Intermediate schools. Cohorts will be paired with groups of 4th graders to share their knowledge. More details soon!
