I am currently reading:
"Twelve-year-old Deza Malone has a close and loving family, and she's the smartest girl in her class in Gary, Indiana. But times are tough, and it's hard for black men like Deza's father to find work. Desperate to help his family, Deza's father leaves town to look for work, and soon Deza, her mom, and her older brother, Jimmie, are setting off in search of him. Along the way, they experience many Depression-era hardships, including living in a shantytown outside Flint MIchigan and riding the rails, all the while never giving up the hope of being together again."
(Description taken from publisher).
Take a look at the display that students see when they enter the Maple Hill Elementary Library! The library has these titles and many more for students to read and learn about Dr. King.
Check out these great winter books as we head into the winter season. Perfect for reading during a snow day!

Holidays Around the World STEAM!
To fit in with the themes of Holidays Around the World Spirit Week that we are celebrating this week, scholars in grades 2-5 participated in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math activities related to different winter holidays! Take a look at what the students saw when they walked into the library this week:
Students used geometric shapes to create Diwali Rangolis!
Students played Dreidel using dinosaurs instead of traditional chocolate coins!
Students were able to learn about Zodiac Animals, determine what their Zodiac Animal is, and then build the animals using Legos!
Students learned about the origin of the tradition of sending Christmas Cards, and were able to create their own Christmas (or winter) cards to send warm wishes!
Students learned the meanings of the different candles used to celebrate Kwanzaa and used Keva blocks to create their own Kinara!
In the library this month, Kindergarten and First Grade scholars will be conducting an author study on author and illustrator Jan Brett! Take a look at some of Jan Brett's work available at the Maple Hill Elementary Library.
