Welcome to the Elementary Speech and Language Department servicing students K-5. I am very excited to be working with your child. In speech we work on improving receptive and expressive language, articulation, auditory processing, phonological awareness, voice and dysfluency.
I look forward to meeting you this school year. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call or email
What is WHAT IS SPEECH-LANGUAGE THERAPY?
Speech-language therapy provides students with the strategies and instructional support they
need to improve their understanding and production of speech and language in academic and
social settings
The following areas may be addressed with your child:
Articulation Disorders: difficulties producing sounds to the point that listeners struggle to
understand what is being said.
Fluency Disorders: problems such as stuttering, in which the flow of speech is interrupted by
abnormal stoppages, partial-word repetitions ("b-b-boy"), or prolonged sounds and syllables
(sssssnake).
Resonance or Voice Disorders: problems with the pitch, volume, or quality of the voice that
distract listeners from what is being said. These types of disorders may also cause pain or
discomfort for a child when speaking.
Receptive Language Disorders: difficulties understanding or processing language.
Cognitive-Communication Disorders: difficulty with communication skills that involve memory,
attention, perception, organization, regulation, and problem solving.
Expressive Language Disorders: difficulty putting words together, limited vocabulary, or
inability to use language in a socially appropriate way.
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC): All forms of communication (other than
oral speech) that are used to express thoughts, needs, wants, and ideas.
Phonological Awareness: A set of skills that children typically develop in the preschool years as
pre-reading skills. Phonological Awareness skills include rhyming, blending, and segmentation.
Auditory Processing: difficulty understanding and following directions.
Students should arrive on time and be prepared for each day. They should have a positive mind set and be respectful to all.
Homework assigned in Google Classroom must be submitted by no later than 12 PM on the date due.
Assignments collected in class must be submitted when class meets on the due date.
Late assignments will have 10 points deducted for each school day after the due date. If there are extenuating circumstances, parents/guardians may contact me by phone at extension 400 or by email, or may contact your child's guidance counselor.
What is the SchoolTool Parent Portal?
Our Academic Management System, SchoolTool, offers the SchoolTool Parent Portal. Parent Portal gives parents access to monitor their children's progress in school and provides a way for parents to get secure online information about their children.
To register for the Parent Portal, please contact your child's main office.
