WHAT IS THE EDGE ACADEMY OF HEALTH SCIENCES?

The ECPS EDGE Academy of  Health Sciences is one of two Edgecombe  County Schools' Early College Programs. Attending an Early College allows students to complete a high school diploma and an associates degree in four to five years.  Students can enroll in their 9th or 10th grade year during the 2023-2024 school year.  Early Colleges accelerate learning in a small, focused atmosphere with significant support.  

HOW IS THE EDGE ACADEMY OF HEALTH SCIENCES DIFFERENT THAN THE HEALTH SCIENCES PROGRAMS OFFERED AT TRADITIONAL HIGH SCHOOLS?

EDGE Academy of Health Sciences students attend school on the Rocky Mount campus of Edgecombe Community College. EDGE Academy of Health Sciences students graduate with any combination of the following: high school diploma, an associate's degree in one of five health sciences pathways, credential(s), certification(s) in one of five health sciences pathways and receive college transfer credit to many colleges and universities.

Students who want to take Health Science courses but remain at their traditional high school will continue to have this opportunity through the ECPS CTE and the College & Career Program (CCP).

IS TRANSPORTATION AVAILABLE FOR EDGE ACADEMY OF HEALTH SCIENCES STUDENTS?

Yes, transportation to and from the EDGE Academy of Health Sciences will be provided.

WHAT ARE THE SCHOOL HOURS FOR THE EDGE ACADEMY OF HEALTH SCIENCE?

School hours are 9:00am-3:00pm.

IS THE EDGE ACADEMY OF HEALTH SCIENCES ON A DIFFERENT CALENDAR THAN TRADITIONAL SCHOOLS?

Yes.  We anticipate that the 2023/2024 calendar will be released in March after approval by the school board.

WILL MEALS BE PROVIDED?

Yes. EDGE Academy of Health Sciences students will have access to breakfast and lunch.  All students will have access to apply for Free/Reduced priced meals.

IS MATH 1 REQUIRED FOR ADMISSION?

No. Students can complete Math 1 at the EDGE Academy of Health Sciences.

IS JROTC AVAILABLE AT THE EDGE ACADEMY OF HEALTH SCIENCES EARLY COLLEGE?

No.  JROTC is not available at the EDGE Academy.

WILL THE EDGE ACADEMY OF HEALTH SCIENCES HOST A PROM AND OTHER DANCES?

Yes. EDGE Academy of Health Sciences students will have a prom and other social events hosted by the school.

WILL STUDENTS GO ON FIELD TRIPS?

Yes. Students will experience field trips and field experiences aligned with health sciences-related career and college opportunities.

WILL THE ACT BE OFFERED AT THE EDGE ACADEMY OF HEALTH SCIENCES?

The ACT exam will all be offered at the EDGE Academy of Health Sciences.

DOES THE EDGE ACADEMY OF HEALTH SCIENCES OFFER SPORTS?

Yes.  Students attending the early college will have the opportunity to try out and participate in sports at their home High School.  

WILL I NEED TO PROVIDE MY OWN TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM ATHLETIC PRACTICES?

At this time students will need to provide their own transportation, however we are working feverishly to identify a way to provide transportation.

WILL THERE BE OPPORTUNITY FOR HANDS-ON LEARNING?

Yes. Early college students will have access to state-of-the-art labs with a focus on hands-on learning to prepare them for careers in the health sciences.

WILL WE WORK WITH ACTUAL PEOPLE OR JUST PROPS AND DUMMIES?

Both! You'll have the opportunity to practice on patient simulators, but you'll also be caring for live patients.

Application Process

WHAT IS THE APPLICATION TIMELINE?

Applications for EDGE Academy of Health Sciences open February 2023 and close March 15, 2023 by 3:00pm.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?

Students currently in 8th grade and 9th grade can apply to begin In 2023/2024 school year.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR THE EARLY COLLEGE?

You apply by completing an application which can be found at EDGE Academy Website or picked up from your Guidance Counselor.  Applications must be received by March 15th by 3:00pmPotential EDGE Academy students will complete an application and interview process.  

ARE STUDENTS SELECTED WITH A LOTTERY PROCESS?

No. Prospective students will submit an application, teacher recommendations, student and parent essays, as well as student and parent interviews.  A selection committee will review all student applications and make final decisions on accepted students. 

WHAT QUESTIONS ARE ASKED IN THE INTERVIEW?

Potential students will be asked about why they are interested in the EDGE Academy of Health Science program, their academic and extracurricular interests, skills & strengths, post-high school plans, and other questions aimed at getting to know each student.

DO STUDENTS NEED TO HAVE ALL A'S AND B'S TO BE CONSIDERED FOR ADMISSION?

No. Grades are important, and students with higher grades may score higher on part of the admissions rubric, but selection criteria also considers students' attendance, skills, interests, essays, interviews, teacher recommendations, and a preference for first-generation college students.

HOW MUCH DOES THE EDGE ACADEMY OF HEALTH SCIENCES COST?

Tuition at the EDGE Academy of Health Sciences is free for accepted students.  Additionally, fees and textbook costs are covered for the duration of the program.
