Welcome, parents and students, to the John A. Holmes High School website. This section of the website has been designed specifically for you and your student. We invite you to explore and stay up-to-date with what’s happening in your child’s school. You will find important information and links here related to the parent and student handbook, student e-mail, helpful reminder and useful web links, NCVPS information, one-to-one updates, Career and College Promise information, Canvas - our learning management system where you can find assignments for class, and the Parent Portal – our official instructional improvement system where you can see student grades, class schedules, and results from assessments.
CAREER & COLLEGE PROMISE
Career and College Promise is NC's commitment to helping every qualified student gain access to an affordable college education and is ready for college or a career after high school. Qualified NC high school age students can begin their two or four-year college work, tuition free, while they are still in high school allowing them to get a head start on their workplace and college preparation. Qualified students can earn:
College credit completely transferable to all UNC System Institutions and many of NC's Independent Colleges and Universities
A credential, certificate, or diploma in a technical career.
There are two Career and College Promise Pathways available for JAHHS students. These are the College Transfer Pathway and the Technical Career Pathway.
College Transfer Pathway
Who is eligible?
High school juniors and seniors as of January 2012 or later.
Students with at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 weighted scale.
Students who have demonstrated college readiness on an appropriate assessment or placement test.
What are the benefits?
College transfer credit toward 44 hours of college credit that will transfer seamlessly to any public or participating independent college or university. (Students must complete all 44-hours to ensure credit is transferable.)
Reduced cost for a two or four-year degree.
Accelerated completion of a diploma, an associate degree, or four-year degree.
Readiness skills for success at the next educational level.
Technical Career Pathway:
Who is eligible?
High school juniors and seniors as of January 2012 or later.
Students with at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 weighted scale OR upon principal recommendation.
Students who have demonstrated college readiness by meeting course prerequisites.
What are the benefits?
A credential, certificate or diploma in a technical career.
A credential that builds skills for an entry-level job.

NC VIRTUAL PUBLIC SCHOOLS (NCVPS)
NCVPS provides students with expanded academic options by offering online courses to North Carolina students. Students from all areas of the state have access to courses in subjects they may not have available at the local high school. Students who take courses offered by NCVPS receive high school credit for these classes. One class equals one high school credit. Classes offered by NCVPS include Honors, Advanced Placement, and Credit Recovery. You may learn more about NCVPS here.
There are a few minimal requirements that students must meet before they can be enrolled in an NCVPS class. These requirements are in place because Edenton Chowan Schools pays tuition and fees for all students enrolled in an NCVPS class and because of a limited number of seats available in distance learning classrooms on the JAHHS campus.
Students must have an overal GPA of 2.0 and a GPA of 2.5 in English classes. Online classes rely heavily on the ability to read, write, and communicate clearly with the instructor.
Students must have a good attendace record with no more than 10 absences during the previous school year. Students can fall behind very quickly in an online class. Exceptions to this attendance requirement may be granted by the JAHHS principal.
Students who fail an online class will not be allowed to enroll in another online class without permission from the principal.
A student who drops an online class after both the JAHHS and NCVPS drop dates have passed will not be allowed to enroll in an online class for the next semester.
Online students must abide by all Internet policies set forth in the Edenton Chowan Schools Policy Manual, the John A. Holmes High School Student Handbook, and any policies set forth by NCVPS and the instructor.
Students will enroll for all online courses through the guidance department.
The last day to enroll in an online NCVPS class will correspond with the school level drop/add dates before the start of each semester.
