Michelle Newsome, Director of Elementary Education

Mrs. Newsome is originally from Port Huron, Michigan. She moved to Eastern, NC, at age 14 and later graduated from Bertie County High School. Mrs. Newsome attended Chowan University where she earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. 

Mrs. Newsome began her education career in Hertford County Schools as an elementary teacher before transitioning to Gates County Schools.  She taught grades 3, 5 and 6 over a span of 12 years. Mrs. Newsome also has education experience as a Family Service Specialist for the Methodist Home for Children in Winton, NC.  Mrs. Newsome joined the staff at WOS in August, 2018, as assistant principal. She completed her Masters of School Administration degree at East Carolina University in 2019 and became principal of White Oak in December, 2020.

Mrs. Newsome believes in building relationships and promoting trust to build a strong foundation for her work. She always wanted to be an educator, feeling that it was embedded in her heart at an early age because of many great educators who showed her love and respect.

Mrs. Newsome is also a proud wife to her husband Larry, and mother to four children. During her times to relax, Mrs. Newsome enjoys bike riding, fishing and reading.

Angie Walston, Principal

Mrs. Angie Walston joined the staff of White Oak Elementary School in 2014. She has 23 years of professional educator experience.  She earned her Master of School Administration degree from East Carolina University.  Go, Pirates!  Prior to joining the White Oak staff, Mrs. Walston served as a teacher in Martin county and in Wilson county.  She earned her National Board Certification in 2006 with recertification in 2016, and was selected by her peers as Teacher of the Year for White Oak Elementary School in 2018.  Mrs. Walston has a passion for supporting the professional growth of teachers.  She has service as a Beginning Teacher Coach and Cooperating Teacher with East Carolina University for teacher interns.

Heather Terrell, Assistant Principal

Mrs. Terrell is a native of Beaufort, NC, but resides in Elizabeth City, NC with her husband and son. Mrs. Terrell started her educational career with Edenton Chowan Schools (D F Walker Elementary) in 2014. She received a B.S. in Elementary Education from Elizabeth City State University and an M.S.Ed in Reading and Literacy from Walden University. Mrs. Terrell will attend East Carolina University this fall to earn her master's in School Administration. During her teaching career, she received Teacher of the Year during the 2018-2019 school year and the 2021-2022 school year.


She is an outgoing individual who not only educates but can impact lives. As a classroom teacher, she fostered positive relationships with her students, teaching them positive affirmations while making learning fun. Mrs. Terrell’s primary goal is to produce a generation of young hardworking, and determined individuals and push them to believe there is no limit to success. Mrs. Terrell is passionate about sharing her knowledge with others and is excited about using her classroom experiences to help influence others. Mrs. Terrell’s motto for life is “Good, better, best, never let it rest, until your good is better, and your better is best.”
