Dolphin Academy is a six-week course to learn more about dolphins and whales of the Mediterranean Sea, how to recognize and approach them, and how you can become a dolphin ambassador to help save and protect the Mediterranean's dolphins.
The course is designed for everyone who wants to learn more about dolphins and whales and how to protect them. You don't need to be an expert or a scientist or to have a science background.
At the end of the course you will be able to recognize the different species of dolphins living in the Mediterranean Sea and their distinctive characteristics. You will know how to approach them in a non-invasive and sustainable way. You will be able to contribute as a citizen scientist to the conservation and protection of these amazing creatures.
You will join me to inspire others to take action.
You will be a Dolphin Ambassador!
Do you think only scientists and experts can make a difference in the conservation and protection of dolphins?
Do you think it is necessary to live near the sea to make a difference?
Do you think you need a Master's degree to learn more about dolphins and how to protect them?
Do you think YOU can "BE THE CHANGE", but you don't know how to do it?
You are not an expert, you don't have a degree,
Then this course is for you
I will share with you the knowledge and experience gained in 25 years of work as a scientist and outreach and dissemination to give you all the instruments to become a Dolphin Ambassador.
The course is divided into two parts. The first three sessions will focus on dolphins and whales of the Mediterranean Sea. We will delve into their characteristics, habits, and behaviours. Increasing knowledge about dolphins' ecology will help us better understand the dangers they face and how we can help them. Consequently, the last three sessions will be focused specifically on what you can do to be a Dolphin Ambassador!
I will guide you on a journey through the Mediterranean Sea, so at the end of the course, you will be able to

The Mediterranean: Sea of wonder
The Mediterranean Sea is one of the most biologically diverse regions on the planet, supporting various marine life, counting over 17.000 species of plants and animals, including dolphins and whales. In the first session, we will explore its incredible biodiversity focusing on big predators.
Wednesday 3rd of May, 18.00 - 20.00 CEST
Dolphin or whale? A teeth case!
Is a dolphin a whale or a whale a dolphin? What is the difference? In this session, we will explore briefly the evolution of dolphins and whales to better understand the difference in their "lifestyle" We will also delve into the different species living in the Mediterranean Sea discovering where they live and why. How do they sleep? What do they eat? How long do they leave? How deep do they dive? And much more.
Wednesday 10th of May, 18.00 - 20.00 CEST
The sound of silence: not in the ocean.
Have you ever "put your ears underwater"? During this session, we will do it. I will guide you through the sounds dolphins and whales use to live a life in the deep. Sound has considerable importance in the life of dolphins and whales. They use sound to scan the environment, hunt prey, and "chat" with the other individual, sometimes with individuals kilometres away.
Wednesday 17th of May, 18.00 - 20.00 CEST
The Mediterranean: Sea of Danger
Plastic pollution, noise pollution, overfishing, and bycatch are the most significant threats to dolphins and whales worldwide. In this session, I'll do an excursus on the major threats dolphins face nowadays in the Mediterranean Sea. Then, we will explore the cause and possible solutions and how we can help reduce human impact on the marine environment and dolphins' lives.
Wednesday 31st of May, 18.00 - 20.00 CEST
Tuna, dolphin, whale ... or what?
"There she blows!" ... but what is it? Is that a fin whale or a sperm whale?
" There are jumping!" but what are they?
Now we know the different species of dolphins and whales living in the Mediterranean Sea, although, identifying them during a boat tour or a research trip is quite challenging. In this session, we will see more in-depth the different features between species and how to recognize them in the wild. How to approach them sustainably and collect valuable data for the research.
Wednesday 7th of June, 18.00 - 20.00 CEST
