With the rise of antibiotic resistant bacteria, marine natural products are becoming an increasingly important source of new antibiotics. The Jaspis species of sponge is native to Florida and has been shown to have antibacterial, anticancer, antitumoral, and other medicinal properties. In this study, extracts from Jaspis sp. were found to have antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). These compounds were purified, and their chemical structure was determined to identify them.
