Our waterfront campus is situated along the shores of Tampa Bay, encompassing diverse coastal habitats that support high avian species richness. The campus provides critical nesting, overwintering, and stopover habitat for numerous resident and migratory bird species (see bird lists). We are in a region with many city, county and state parks and across the water from a National Wildlife Refuge.
While there is no official Ornithology Major, we have 4 bird related majors that will prepare you for a future in ornithology (many students do a doube major or a major/minor): Biology, Environmental Studies, Animal Studies and Marine Science. We have several classes that focus on birds (e.g., Avian Ecology & Conservation, Field Ornithology, Waterbird Biology, Seabird Stewardship) and many others that would help you better understand birds: Animal Behavior, Bioaccoustics, Conservation Biology, Ecology, Wetlands, Wildlife Policy, Vertebrate Anatomy and more.
There are many of bird related internships and research opportunities within a short drive/bike ride: St. Pete Audubon, Seaside Seabird Sanctuary, Boyd Hill Nature Park are some examples.
We have two ornitholgy-related Clubs:
Eckerd Bird Club (Audubon Campus Chapter) and EC Wildlife Rescue
