Abstract
In software development, usability addresses the ease with which a user can learn to use the software and complete desired tasks efficiently and enjoyably. Usability is important for a planned update of Digital Analysis and Recognition of Whale Images on a Network (DARWIN), photo recognition software for the identification of individual dolphins. Whether or not users choose to use a software in large part has to do with ease of use, and the most difficult part of this is initially learning to use the software. To understand the choices available to potential users, all readily available software packages for identifying individual dolphins were located and assessed for their usability by a complete novice. From this assessment, a set of recommendations was compiled to make the use of DARWIN easier and more efficient. This study found that concise, informative language, well organized manuals and beginner’s guides, and an intuitive interface are the most influential features a photo recognition software can have toward usability for a beginner.
