Today was our first deep dive into the wonderful land of Peru! We focused on the geography, people, and culture. Our craft for today was making quipus. Quipus was the Incans way to record information. Quipus are strings tied into knots. The length, knot placement and even the color communicate something. We pondered what the Incans would have recorded. We came to the conclusion that they might have recorded the seasons, crop production and even to report taxes.
Our second day we did a lot of crafts. Our students learned more about the Incans way of life. We looked at the mythology (what the Incans believed in) and researched different gods and goddesses. We did a foldable to be able to take a deep dive on what the gods focused on. Then we turned our attention to the art and craftsmanship of the Incans. We looked at the sculptures they created and tried to recreate them using clay.
On our third day of camp we looked more at the geography of Peru. We looked Machu Picchu and its historical significance to the country of Peru. We learned that it is counted as a world heritage site and one of the seven wonders of the world. The students then drew a mask inspired by the Incans.
On our this day we focused on learning about the different wildlife found in Peru. Did you know that there is over 4,000 different speicies of butterflies? In the morning we were able to do something special for the entire camp. We preformed a chant inspired by Peru. Then we showed off a reader theater we did.
Brand new week of camp! That means brand new set of kids. There is a lot we did this time around. Same as the other day though we made our knots and our Peruvian textile inspired drawing. We then sat down and the students in groups researched different aspects of Peruvian culture.
