Selection of Materials Procedures
All School Libraries follow School Board Policies when Selecting Books:
EF (Legal)
EF (Local)
Gather list of books
Teacher/student recommendations
Published/recommended lists (award books, lists from journals/publications)
Determine the age level/rating of the book to determine if the book is age appropriate for the campus (K-3, 3-6, 5-8, YA, Adult for Young Adult, Adult).
Review titles for appropriateness of the content for intended grade levels, regardless of award status and level/rating.
Review Options
Pre-reading of the book by purchaser prior to ordering
Professionally published reviews (minimum of 2) Ex. School Library Journal, Kirkus, Booklist, Horn Books, Publisher's Weekly...
Inquire with other campuses who have purchased same title/s
Book Reviews and Book Talks
Guiding Questions
Does the content match the maturity level of the intended audience?
Is the language appropriate for the student ages?
Create Order
*If a title is received and questioned for appropriateness, the book will be reviewed by committee using the guidelines of the district's school board reconsideration policy.
