Welcome! My name is Mr. Webb I am happy to be here with you at McKinley Middle Magnet. This will be my second year teaching at McKinley Middle Academic Magnet. I will be helping you get used to the atmosphere just as you are transitioning to this new stage of learning. I feel extremely lucky to be your teacher and am looking forward to having a successful year. McKinley Middle Academic Magnet School strongly believes in encouraging academic honesty and independence through each child's experience in and out of the classroom. Those qualities and much more ranging from respect for others to maintaining classroom decorum will be expected to be displayed by Middle School Social Studies Students.
Those who are serious about acquiring skills that will help them to become better analytical thinkers through a variety of instructive techniques are more than welcome to share their ideas, comments, and suggestions with the teacher. Let's make this experience a unique and exciting one as we progress through the academic year.
Course Description
We will do a variety of activities and assignments that will further student knowledge of United States History and geography. In this course students will learn about key people, places and events that took place during various times in our countries history. Students in this course will have an in-depth study of factual content, vocabulary and writing in social studies. Students taking this course will also read an assortment of historical passages in which they will analyze causes and effects of various events throughout history. Students will respond to the passages through different writing assignments, quizzes, and exams. Students will also have reinforcement of subjects with daily external reinforcement (such as achieve 3000) to strengthen their comprehension of the subject. Vocabulary instruction will be at the beginning of each unit to help students have better understanding of the subject matter they are engaged in. Lastly, students will complete exams at the end of each unit which allows them to present their findings and conclusions of the unit.
Required Materials:
1 pack of pencils
1 pack of loose leaf paper
1 charged chrome book
Highlighters
All students are expected to arrive online and in class prepared with required materials. It is unacceptable to come to class unprepared and expect to borrow materials from classmates or the teacher. No student will be allowed to go to their locker during instructional time, or to another classroom for books or materials.
Virtual Class Rules and Expectations:
Rules and expectations are needed to ensure that the class session stays orderly and chaos free, so that all students can learn and do their best.
Follow directions and remain respectful and appropriate.
Promptly log on at the scheduled time to all virtual class sessions as directed in google classroom.
Be responsible for your own work and study habits. Plagiarism, cheating or helping someone to cheat will not be tolerated and will result in an automatic zero.
Stay focused on the lesson and do not disrupt the learning of others.
During live sessions, make sure your microphone is muted unless otherwise directed by the teacher.
During live sessions, type any questions or concerns you may have in the chat box.
**All students are expected to follow EBRPSS 1:1 Technology Handbook rules and regulations at all times. Any violations of these rules and regulations including the use of unauthorized websites/applications will be subject to the discipline plan outlined within.**
Classroom Policies, Procedures, and Routines:
Teacher´s Expectations and Daily Procedures
Each student is expected to arrive on time, come in to the classroom in an orderly manner, and sit in his or her assigned seat.
Each student is expected to be prepared for class by bringing all materials such as planner, binder, pen, and required text.
Each student is expected to be respectful towards the teacher and classmates.
Each student is expected to have a positive role in the classroom by actively participating in discussion, staying focused on assignments, and paying attention during instruction.
Classroom Rules:
Behave in an orderly manner.
Be on task at all times.
Respect yourself and others.
Promote safety in everything you do.
Arrive to class on time with required materials.
Consequences:
1st Offense (Infraction)-Verbal Warning/Restate the expectations and rules.
2nd Offense (Infraction)-Contact parent
3rd Offense (Infraction)-Contact parent
4th Offense (Infraction)-Discipline Referral
**Gross disrespect, obscenity, and fighting may result in an immediate office referral.
Grading
Grades may come from the following: tests, quizzes, and group work, bell ringers, homework, and classwork. Assignments are graded so that no assignment/test heavily outweighs others. However, a good grade cannot be earned without both studying and completing assigned work.
The grading scale is the usual:
A: 93% and above
B: 92 – 85%
C: 84 – 75%
D: 74 – 67%
F: 66 % and below Grading
*Note E=Assignment Excused O-Assignment turned in blank, Assignment was not done, or plagiarized
*It is the student’s responsibility to make up work that is missed while they were absent. This is to be done in a timely manner (should be completed within the week of return).
All Assignments must be turned in by Due Date!
