Question: If we have three teams -one for each grade level- do we have to have three different sponsors or can we have 1 or two sponsors and they manage all three teams?
Answer: The teams are based on grade-level bands. This means that your school can have only 1 team with a mixture of 7 students for you grade level band School Challenge. This requires one sponsor for the school team.
Question: When do we need to know who will be on our teams and how would you suggest going about that selection process?
Answer: The last day to submit your registration is January 14th. There will be a virtual meeting for Sponsors on the 19th of January, but I think you should have your students in mind at that time or have selected them already.
Question: Should the students meet outside of the listed days to work on this project?
Answer: Yes, the students should be working on their process and design beginning in January. Within each challenge, there are specific items that they must complete and turn in as a team. The Day of Design is for District partners and community member to meet the children, check out their designs and ideas, and give them helpful tips that may make their entry more refined.
Question: Do we begin the challenge with our students prior to the day of design or is that when the challenge will be introduced?
Answer: My previous answer should cover this, but let me know if you all need more clarification.
Question: Is that day a field trip day for our students who are competing or is this an after school activity? This puts limits on what students can participate.
Answer: This will be a field trip day that will be done in shifts throughout the day. For example, 6-8 may have a time of 8a-11a to come to the location (TBD). We will work out the kinks soon, and we are mindful of students needing to have lunch at school.
Question: Will the district be arranging transportation for those students if it is during the day or after school?
Answer: I will be speaking with my supervisor, Dr. Robinson-COA, about how the transportation will work. We should know something by the time of the Sponsor meeting when we have definite numbers.
Question: Will we receive further information on this when we do our PD on January 3rd?
Answer: You can ask me about it, as I will be there floating, but the most pertinent information will be given during the virtual Sponsor meeting on January 19th.
Question: Will we be able to work in our classrooms at all that day or will we be at different locations all day?
Answer: When the students submit their team project it will be in a centralized location. When finalists are selected, they will also come to do their "pitch" at a centralized location in the District.
