Moodle instructions for students

Estonian Aviation Academy uses the e-learning environment Moodle (moodle.eava.ee).

The courses are mostly partly online, i.e. as part of the course, you also have to participate in classroom meetings (lectures, seminars, practicals, etc.). You can find information in the corresponding subject program. Teachers use Moodle to share course learning materials, submit graded assignments, evaluate and provide feedback, communicate (forums), and support student independent work (e.g. self-tests).

How to log into Moodle?

Once you have clicked on the Log in link, you will see Moodle log-in page.

Your username will be the beginning part of your academy email address (typically firstname.lastname).

Your password is the password assigned to your computer services. This should be the same password that you use to log into academy computers and SIS Tahvel (Study Information System).

Moodle front page - Dashboard

After you have completed your log-in, you will be directed to the Moodle front page - dashboard.

My courses

List of all courses related to you.

It is possible to sort the courses using several filters: All, In progress, Future, Past,  Starred Removed from view.

You can sort the list of courses on the desktop by Course name or Last accessed. It is also possible to choose how the course is displayed (Card, List, Summary).

Joining a course

In ELA Moodle courses are categorized. Choose the category that suits you or all categories. The corresponding list of courses opens. If you know the course name or code, you can use the search.

You cannot freely join the courses. The lecturer may ask you to self-enrol to course in Moodle, previously giving you the password required for self-enrolment.

Learners who register for a course in the study information system (SIS) and who have an Estonian personal identification number in the system, are usually added to the Moodle e-course through SIS by the lecturer when the course begins.

Each Moodle course might look different, because each lecturer decides what the course will look like, and what tools will be used.

Editing your profile

After entering Moodle, you can edit your user data. To do so, click on your name and Profile - Edit profile.

It is important that the e-mail address in the profile is correct, because all Moodle-related notifications and posts are sent to that address. Adding a profile picture is recommended.

Also, check the timezone.  This field is used to convert time-related messages on the system (such as assignment deadlines) from the default Moodle timezone to the correct time in whichever zone you have selected.   By default is selected the timezone Europe/Tallinn.

Messages

It is possible to send a message to any Moodle user. These messages are private.

Most often used tools in courses

Forum is a medium for asynchronous communication. The lecturer decides which type of forum and for what purpose is used in the e-course.

Quizzes can be for self-checking in the course or for knowledge assessment. Self-tests can usually be taken an unlimited number of times.

Graded quizzes usually open and close on a specific day and time, and there is also a time limit for taking the test. Corresponding information can be seen by clicking on the name of the test.

There are several options for submitting homework, the lecturer chooses the most suitable option for the respective work.

Homework can be submitted as a file (or several files), as an online text, also as a video or audio file, etc. In most cases, homework assignments also have fixed deadlines. Follow specific homework instructions.

From the menu option Grades, you can see your performance grades (in points or percentages) in the Moodle course. In the grade table, you can also see the feedback given by the lecturer.

A Completion Progress bar (set by the teacher) can also be added to the course. Here you can see an overview of what activities have been done in this course and what still needs to be done.
