How'd we do it? Here's our process, in a nutshell:
Inspired by the work of Jay Rehak and his students at Whitney Young High School in Chicago, ETHS AFES (East Troy High School Accelerated Freshman English Scholars) decided to try their hand at writing a collaborative novel.
English Teacher Claudia Felske wrote the opening chapter, creating the premise for the novel (The opening chapters, therefore, are virtually identical for the two novels; however, after Chapter 1, the novels diverge based on the creative license and choices of the writers in each class).
Each student chose an historical time and place and a teenage conflict to explore in their chapter.
After MUCH writing, editing, and re-writing, the stories were compiled into a logical order.
Then, the protagonist, Margo, reacted to these chapters.
This lead to her growth as a character and provided inspiration for the novel's closing chapter, written by Felske.
AFES would like to acknowledge that the process and its results would not have been possible without the efforts of many contributors .
