Standards-Based Grading: Report Card Descriptors
Our school uses Standards-Based Grading (SBG) to show how well students are learning specific grade-level standards. Instead of traditional letter grades, report cards reflect progress using the scale below:
•4 – Exemplary: Demonstrates in-depth learning of the grade level standard.
•
•3 – Proficient: Demonstrates learning of the grade level standard.
•
•2 – Approaching: Demonstrates partial learning at the grade level standard.
•
•1 – Beginning: Demonstrates initial learning at the grade level standard.
•
•No Evidence: Not enough evidence of learning to assess progress on the standard.
Not Assessed: This standard has not been assessed during this grading period
Grading & Reporting at East Sac County Elementary School
ESC Elementary uses standards-based grading (SBG) to provide a clear, accurate picture of student learning. Unlike traditional grading, SBG measures progress toward specific learning standards, offering meaningful feedback on strengths and areas for growth. This approach ensures grades reflect true learning and help guide students toward success.
Purpose of Grade: The purpose of grades at East Sac County Elementary is to:
•Communicate a student’s level of academic proficiency on district learning standards to students, parents, and others
•Provide information for students for self-evaluation and reflection
•Provide feedback on instructional effectiveness
•Provide data for educational paths and programs
Classroom Practices:
•Grades are a reflection of learning only
•Feedback is critical for student learning
•Students should have multiple attempts to demonstrate learning
•New information about learning replaces old information
•Communication and consistency are crucial
