Macungie Elementary School
Hello! My name is Mrs. Cornish, and I am thrilled to be your child’s Kindergarten teacher this year. I’m looking forward to creating a caring, joyful classroom where students feel safe, valued, and excited to learn. This year will be filled with new friendships, singing, laughing, and lots of learning!
I earned my bachelor’s degrees in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Clarion University and later completed my master’s degree in Elementary Education at Delta State University. I began my teaching journey in Greensboro, North Carolina, where I taught second grade for four years before moving back to Pennsylvania in 2010. Since then, my husband, Doug, and I have grown our family to include three wonderful children—Dougie, Addie, and Owen.
For the past five years, I’ve proudly served the East Penn School District in a variety of roles, including building substitute and academic support teacher at Alburtis Elementary. This will be my third year teaching Kindergarten at Macungie Elementary, and I couldn’t be more excited!
I can’t wait to partner with you for an amazing school year full of growth, discovery, and joy.
Warmly,
Mrs. Cornish
What is i-Ready Math?
In Kindergarten, we use the i-Ready Math program to help students build a strong foundation in early math skills. Throughout the year, we will explore key concepts through hands-on activities, games, and interactive lessons. Our focus areas will include:
Solid and flat shapes (geometry)
Number recognition (1–20)
Counting to 100
Addition and subtraction within 10
Number poems (0–9) to help with number formation
The i-Ready program supports a deep understanding of math by encouraging students to think, explore, and explain their reasoning. It’s a great way to build both confidence and problem-solving skills in young learners!
What is Fundations?
In Kindergarten, we use the Fundations program to build early literacy skills in a fun and structured way. Through this program, students will:
Learn to recognize uppercase and lowercase letters
Master letter sounds
Practice proper letter formation
Begin to explore digraphs like sh, th, ch, and wh
Fundations provides a strong foundation in phonics, handwriting, and spelling—essential skills for becoming confident readers and writers. It’s a hands-on and engaging way for students to connect sounds to letters and begin reading words independently.
What is Heggerty?
In Kindergarten, we use the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Program to help students build strong early reading skills. This fun and engaging program focuses on teaching children how to hear, recognize, and work with the sounds in spoken words.
Each day, students participate in quick activities like:
Rhyming
Clapping out syllables
Identifying beginning and ending sounds
Blending and segmenting sounds in words
These playful routines help children make important connections between sounds and letters, setting the stage for successful reading and writing. Heggerty is a powerful tool that builds a solid foundation in phonemic awareness, one of the most important building blocks in learning how to read!

What is Lucy Calkins Writing?
In Kindergarten, we use the Lucy Calkins Units of Study in Writing to help students become confident and enthusiastic writers. Through this program, children learn how to express their thoughts and ideas by drawing, labeling, and writing simple sentences.
Students explore different types of writing such as:
Personal stories- Trimester 1
How-to books- Trimester 2
Opinion writing- Trimester 3
Lucy Calkins encourages young writers to take risks, share their voice, and grow through daily writing practice. As the year progresses, students learn that their words have power—and that they are authors!

This is my primary means of communication. I will send out weekly updates on Seesaw.
You may view past and prest newsletters. These newsletters will preview the week and include what will be covered in class.
