Mrs. Swauger is a sixth grade Reading teacher at Eyer Middle School. A proud graduate of Kutztown University and Penn State University, she brings her love of reading to her students, teaching students to foster their own love of reading while honing essential skills for their future.
Outside the classroom, Mrs. Swauger enjoys spending time with her family. Reading and gardening take up much of her free time.
In sixth grade Reading, we tackle a variety of Units of Study throughout the three trimesters. The outline below provides a quick summary of each module.
Fiction
At the beginning of the year, we will review literary vocabulary that readers use when writing or discussing literature. We then move into a deep study of character, focusing on describing characters based on their character traits and motivations. We also review and practice writing Text Dependent Analysis using evidence to support our thinking.
In this unit, we will focus on the differences between fiction and nonfiction reading. We will learn how using main ideas and details can help us learn new information and make sense of our learning. Students will have an opportunity to continue honing their Text Dependent Analysis skills in this unit as well.
By the end of the year, students are ready to practice the skill of discussing their reading. Students will choose from a selection of books, and will read and discuss those books.
You don't need all of these supplies. We will have some available in the classroom for all students to use.

You can always email me with questions, but the best way to see what we're doing in class and if your child has assignments coming up is by getting connected on the following two program!
This is where students can find digital assignments and materials for each class.
Powerschool is where students and families can access their grades.
Check out our Family Tech Resources Website! The purpose of this site is to provide both students and families of the East Penn School District resources on the technology they are using in the classroom. Some of the resources are created by East Penn, while others may be created by the companies themselves.
