On-Level, CP, & GP Courses

What to read...

Students in on-level, CP, & GP courses may choose a nonfiction or fiction book for their summer reading experience.  Students must choose a book of recognized literary merit at an appropriate reading level. The sites listed below provide a starting point to assist students in selecting an appropriate work.

We encourage parents to assist their students in selecting interesting, appropriate titles for their summer reading.

A detailed list of book sources may be found HERE.

About your assignment...

While reading . . . Choose a note-taking strategy to assist in the comprehension and analysis of your summer reading book and to support your summer reading assessment.  Here are some good ideas to get started:

Resource 1: Note Taking Method (The flip out chart is a great idea)--This is a good resource. Stick with it through her recommendations for highlighters. What comes after is quite helpful.

Resource 2: Annotating a novel

Resource 3: Sketchnoting

Summer Reading Assessment:

The goal for the summer reading assignment is to develop and foster a reading culture by encouraging students to choose books that teach, inspire, and entertain them. As we transition away from tying a graded assessment to the summer reading for our on-level, CP & GP courses, we still want our students to be prepared to discuss their books with the teacher and/or other students, as well as to respond to their reading through writing or speaking
