Heather Herman is a reading interventionist at Lower Macungie Middle School, where she provides students with the tools and strategies to help them be successful readers across all subject areas. After being a graphic designer for six years, Dr. Herman decided to pursue a career in education. She earned her bachelor's degree from Penn State and became an elementary teacher at Wescosville Elementary. It was there that she discovered her fascination with the process of acquiring reading. She decided to dive deeper into this acquisition of reading and proceeded to get her reading specialist certification from Kutztown University. From there, she earned her doctorate from Widener University and moved over to Lower Macungie Middle School as a reading interventionist. The science of reading continues to fascinate her as she supports her students as they gain the strategies necessary to understand what they read.
Outside of the classroom, Dr. Herman is married with two children, ages 19 and 17. They have two very active dogs - a Border Collie and an Australian Shepherd - along with two tortoises and a leopard gecko with no teeth.
When Dr. Herman is not teaching, she enjoys walking, thrifting in New York City, and doing artsy things; especially creating jewelry and painting clothing.
Our Reading Seminar classes support students’ academic success in literacy through research-based interventions. In Reading Seminar, students grow their stamina, fluency, word-level understanding, and comprehension in small guided reading groups and word study. Interventions are determined after careful assessment and analysis by the support team using data from numerous sources.
This intervention is a word-level reading intervention which targets specific phonics skills that allow students to sound out and spell words in their reading and writing based on patterns they are learning each week. In addition, it incorporates morphology-the study of prefixes, suffixes, root and base words-and syllabication.
This reading intervention targets specific skills based on an assessment the students take one-on-one with a teacher. There are six or less students in each group. This intense intervention works on comprehension monitoring strategies, word patterns, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension at the group's instructional level. Each student is assessed bi-weekly through reading with a teacher.
All students are given a 1 1/2-inch binder and a notebook that stays at school. This binder will come home at the end of the year so they can use it as a reference for future years.

You can always email me with questions, but the best way to see what we're doing in class is to read the weekly newsletter that comes home on most Fridays. It is also linked below.
This is my primary means of communication. Each week focuses on a decoding or comprehension strategy/tool that students utilize in the classroom. A paper copy will come home on Fridays.
Check out our Family Tech Resources Website! The purpose of this site is to provide both students and families of the East Penn School District resources on the technology they are using in the classroom. Some of the resources are created by East Penn, while others may be created by the companies themselves.
