INTRODUCTION
Dr. Karen Trinkle
As a district, we have recognized the urgency to create positive, sustainable change for our students and employees. Through our work with the Diversity Alliance and our discussions with our community, we continue to ask: What does an Anti-Racist school district look like, behaviorally? How do we navigate race? These are essential questions, and through district leadership, staff and community commitment, we are questioning where the district is as a multicultural organization and where the district needs to go in the future. Further, the Diversity Alliance is taking actionable steps to assess how to get there, and identifying and analyzing the barriers and challenges that will impact that change.
Members of the EASD advocate for workplace equity, which requires compassion, curiosity, and continual introspection. Intersectionality considers different systems of oppression, and specifically how they overlap and are compounded. Intersectionality is the acknowledgement that everyone has their own unique experiences of discrimination and oppression and we must consider everything and anything that can marginalize people. This must be done without further segregation.
The Commitment necessary to become an Anti-Racist organization needs to be a district-wide approach that is goal driven and generates Organizational Change at the building level, and can only be accomplished through confronting racism, organizational self-reflection, relationship building, and a balanced examination of curriculum. The Diversity Alliance will deepen your political analysis of racism and oppression so that there is a strong understanding of how personal experiences and feelings fit into a larger picture.
