Content Filtering and Monitoring

Students at Hiland High and Middle School 9+have access to their own Chromebook! While this is an exciting opportunity for our school, it also brings with it many questions about appropriate devise use.

In order to block inappropriate content, monitor student activity, and keep students on-task, each Chromebook will be using two programs that work together. Below is a brief description of each with links (click the images) to more information.

Blocking Inappropriate Content

iBoss is the first layer of device management and content filtering. Its purpose is to block inappropriate content and will work both on and off school grounds. This program is collaboratively managed by the District’s technology department and TCCSA. It specializes in 1:1 initiatives by managing devices in the cloud. This ensures protection no matter what network the device is accessing. Additionally, iBoss is used to filter content on all other district owned devices.

Monitoring Device Activity and Managing Content

GoGuardian is the second layer of device management and content filtering. GoGuardian is a cloud-based program that is managed by Hiland’s administration and the District’s technology department. GoGuardian can allow, block, and monitor Chromebook activity. There are many features of this program that include logging device history for up to six months, creating individual account reports, allowing and blocking content during designated times, and an alerting system that notifies administrators if designated content or keywords are searched.

Additionally, one of the most exciting features of the program is GoGuardian Teacher! GoGuardian Teacher allows staff to monitor device use while students are in class. Staff will be able “lock” students into a website, give them access to resources during certain times, and monitor student activity from their device.
