Ask your learner about the recent presentation about summer reading at their school. Their school librarian and the East Hampton Public Library spoke to them about exciting books and fun activities offered in the community this summer. They were encouraged to read books on topics that interest them, visit the public library and participate in a reading program. Not to mention, enjoy a fun reading celebration with their new teachers and classmates in the fall!
Why is it important to read during the summer months?
Summer reading programs offer extensive reading opportunities to develop reading skills, satisfy intellectual curiosity and instill the practice of lifelong learning. Without practice, learners lose reading skills over the summer months. Increased time reading can improve reading, writing, and spelling ability, cultivate larger vocabularies and develop understanding of complex grammatical structures. With this practice, they will be ready to learn when they return to school in the fall.
