Basic Skills Instruction (BSI)

BSI is an instructional model used to tier and tailor instruction in a smaller group setting. BSI takes place during our math and/or reading independent time to ensure students are not missing any new, whole-group content. Students will leave the classroom alongside some of their peers and visit another teacher for one period to get small group instruction on specific concepts they may be struggling with. Students must be referred by the classroom teacher and meet the criteria for entry to the program.

Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS)

I&RS is a program that struggling students may be referred to in order to help develop a plan of action to close learning gaps. The I&RS team consists of the classroom teacher, as well as several other grade-level representatives, the school counselor, the building principal and a child study team member. The purpose of this team is to create a plan and develop strategies to target specific learning needs for students. These interventions are put into place for 6 weeks with documentation of progress. After 6 weeks, the I&RS team reconvenes and discusses the students progress and either develops a new goal and plan, or brainstorms new strategies for the current goal.Â
