Lyrical History and Background
Since the style of one of the pieces I am being assed in is lyrical I decided to research into the history of lyrical dance. I found that lyrical dance is a form of contemporary dance that seamlessly blends elements of ballet, jazz, and modern dance. It emerged in the late 20th century as a response to the more rigid and structured styles of classical ballet and modern dance and is sort of a mix of the two styles but the boundaries are more fluid. I decided to research further into the fascinating history, background and characterises of lyrical dance and here is what I found:

This research has really helped me gain a better understanding of the style I am going to focus on having more fluidity within my movements for the performance and really try and find an emotional connection as this is so important when dancing in the style of lyrical.
Watching other dancers on YouTube
I thought I should have a look at other people dancing to this song and in this style to really build my inspiration and also help me to think about how I would want to perform this, helping me to gain a better understanding of the vibe of our dance by looking at others. I decided to look at some videos on YouTube. Watching these YouTube videos of other dancers performing to the same song and in the same style has really inspired me for several reasons. Seeing each dancer bring their unique flair, interpretation, and energy really broadened my horizons of what I can do for this dance. I am now going to use the fluidity of I Have Nothing - Lyrical Dance (youtube.com) they where so fluid in there movements and they where all so in time with each other they also had really good dynamics I feel incorporating there fluidity of movement into my dance will really help me. I am going to use the performance of Expressenz Dance Center - I Have Nothing (youtube.com) This dance is so good and so inspiring it is very technically difficult but all the dancers are so in time with each other. I really loved the way they performed this they had a good mix of graceful lyrical elements and more hard hitting emotional elements when the song became more emotional. I definitely want to use this when dancing our group piece. I also want to bring the control and technique of "I Have Nothing" - Inspiration Dance Academy (youtube.com). these guys where so controlled and definitely where using there core throughout which is something I defiantly need to work on to have a better performance for when we do our dance. This research has been really valuable and I feel I understand the style lyrical more from seeing others doing it. Observing these diverse interpretations have sparked new ideas and inspire creativity for our dance to “I have nothing”. Seeing these other dancers execute moves with precision and grace has motivated me to improve my technical skills. By analysing their techniques, it has helped to identify areas where I need to focus more attention, such as really getting the choreography so I can perform it well. I also have realized I really need to work on my core because the dancer in Alyssa Huleatt - I Have Nothing (youtube.com) Video has such a strong core and that's why it looked so good she was so in control and had great stamina because her performance stayed good the whole way through. I want to work on my stamina to have this same quality of control in the dance that we do. This kind of focused observation I feel has helped me refine my own technique and strive for a higher level of performance. Witnessing how these other dancers have conveyed their emotions through their movements I feel has enhanced my own emotional expression. Dance is not just about physical movements but also about conveying a story or feeling and I feel the videos where they performed more were the ones that I thought were the best, so I need to be doing this. Watching these dancers has shown me how to use body language, facial expressions and timing. I feel the better this is the stronger the connection with the audience on an emotional level will be. Seeing others successfully perform these dances has boosted my confidence and motivation. It reassures me that my goals are achievable and provides an example of what success looks like. "If I Could" choreographed and danced by Doug Caldwell (youtube.com) this performance moved me to tears, his heart is so open when he dances and he performance so well and it feels so real. He doesn't just preform, he fully emotionally connects it was so beautiful to see. I definitely want to use this piece to help me when we do ours I want to dance with such an open heart as he did.
