Day 1: November 21st

Day 1, 10:30 AM EST: Technical Sessions 1

Indigenous Mapping with Google Tools

In this session we’ll give an overview of the different technologies in “the Google toolbox” and how Indigenous communities have been using Google mapping tools to map and tell stories about land and water.

Day 1, 11:45 AM EST: Technical Sessions 2

My Maps for Environmental Change

My Maps is a quick and easy way to create interactive maps that visualize environmental change. Using My Maps you can add 10 layers of content, customize the appearance of your data, and embed a map in your website. New improvements allow you to export a CSV (spreadsheet) file from your map and update your map layers when new information is added to imported spreadsheet files.

In this session we will do hands-on activities to learn about ways to use Google Forms to gather information from the public, create a response spreadsheet, import the responses into a My Maps, update the map layer when new responses are added to the spreadsheet, customize the map layers, and export map layers as CSV files. We will learn how to fill out Google Forms on phones to facilitate community engagement, but participants will need a laptop in order to create Forms, Sheets, and My Maps. The focus will be on efficient workflows that can be used in community engagement and planning in this time of rapid environmental and climate change.

Introduction to UX/UI

What is a User Interface? How is it related to the User Experience? In this session we’ll start introducing ourselves in the world of web programming by understanding initial concepts about UI/UX

Day 1, 2:00 PM EST: Technical Sessions 3

Earth Engine for Environmental Change

Google Earth Engine is a powerful platform for analyzing and visualizing changes in land use and land cover over time. In this session we will use Timelapse, Global Forest Watch, Surface Water Explorer, and other tools that were built on the Earth Engine platform in hands-on activities to create animations and conduct analyses. Participants will investigate the impact of fires and floods, learn to use the tools to quantify change, and explore ways to use the tools in their own work. We will also introduce a series of on-demand activities that will help participants learn how to access the full power of Earth Engine for their own work.

Day 2: November 22nd

Day 2, 10:15 AM EST: Technical Sessions 4

Direct to Digital with Google Earth Pro

In this session we’ll focus on the technical skills and best practices of mapping Indigenous knowledge and traditional land use with Google Earth using the Direct-to-Digital method. We’ll introduce you to Google Earth and cover the basics of how to create a simple 3D map with all the feature types – points, lines, and polygons – for mapping Indigenous knowledge and traditional land use. You’ll learn how to plan your interview, what questions you might ask, what equipment you’ll need to bring and more.

Day 2, 11:30 AM EST: Technical Sessions 5

Importing GIS Data In Google Earth Pro

In this session participants will learn how to bring different types of datasets into Google Earth Pro which will help in understanding your community and facilitating Direct to Digital interviews, such as image overlays (i.e. historical maps), GIS shapefiles, and GPS data.

Day 2, 1:45 PM EST: Technical Sessions 6

Indigenous Storytelling with Google Earth Web

Indigenous storytelling is deeply rooted in places of meaning, in contrast to stories told in the “Hollywood” style that are disassociated from culturally meaningful places. The 3D immersive imagery of Google Earth allows us to better visualize our stories on a landscape when we come together in a virtual environment. Google Earth Web is a browser based version of Google Earth that is user friendly, creates easily controlled presentations that move through the virtual landscape, and can be shared online. In this session we will work with Joseph Erb to create five beat stories that better reflect storytelling traditions, and use Google Earth Web to virtually walk the land while telling our stories.

Day 3: November 23rd

Day 3, 10:15 AM EST: Technical Sessions 7

Creating animations with Google Earth

This session will focus on how Google Earth Studio can be used to create custom animations and videos leveraging Google Earth’s imagery database to explore lands and maps in an engaging way.

Day 3, 11:30 PM EST, Technical Sessions 8

Connecting My First Website to Google Spreadsheets

As we have our website developed using HTML and CSS, we will now in this session learn how we can get important information from the users and store it in Google Spreadsheets that will work as our database.

Day 3, 4:15PM EST, Technical Sessions 9

Rendering Data From Spreadsheets Using Google Maps API

In this series we learned so far how to create a simple website, connecting it to Google Spreadsheets for storing user information. In this final session we will learn how to render our data to show it on Google Maps, creating a unique user experience.
