Hands-on Activity #1

Download the Caribou Hills GPX file. "Caribou Hills.gpx"
In Google Earth, import the GPX file with “Create GPS Tracks” selected.
Play the track.
Now, import the GPX file with “Create KML LineStrings” selected.
Open the folders in the Places Panel to look at the points and lines.

Hands-on Activity #2

Download the place names shapefiles for the Northwest Territories from "Base Data.zip".
Unzip the file.
In Google Earth Pro, go to File menu > Open or Import...
Navigate to folder with your data
Select the first .shp file.
Walk through import wizard and create a new style template for your layer
Styling and symbology for these layers can then be adjusted to your preferences
Import the second .shp file and repeat.

Hands-on Activity #3

Download the historic map of Montreal in 1949 "Historic_LandUse_Montreal_1949.jpg"
In Google Earth, zoom to the area around Le Westin, Montreal
Click on the Add Image Overlay icon and select the 1949 Montreal Land Use Map
Rotate and resize the map to line it up with the Google Earth imagery
Use the transparency slider to check alignment

Hands-on Activity #4

Open the KML text snippet in the ScreenOverlay_KMLCode.rtf file
Download the HistoricLandUse_Legend.png file
Edit the text marked “ADD FOLDER PATH” to select the image
1. Example folder path for mac users shown on right in purple
2. For Windows users, see red text for an example
Copy the entire text from the KML snippet
Paste into My Places
