Import GIS Data

In this session participants will learn how to bring different types of datasets into Google Earth Pro which will help in understanding your community and facilitating Direct to Digital interviews, such as historical maps, GIS shapefiles, and GPS data.

What you'll need to use Google Earth Pro

1. You'll need to use a desktop or laptop computer (Google Earth Pro can not be used on a mobile device.

2. Connect your computer to the internet

3. Download and install Google Earth Pro (download for free here)

Data Downloads

• GPS track - download here

• Historical maps for image overlays

  • Marine use map, W̱SÁNEĆ First Nations, - download here

  • Montreal Historic Land use - download here

• GIS Data

  • Aboriginal Lands, published by Natural Resources Canada.

    • Read about dataset here

    • Download SHP file "AL_TA_SK_SHP_eng.zip" from FTP server here.

    • Unzip the file.

  • Canadian Geographic Names, found on the GeoGratis spatial product index here.

    • Click on the Themes tab.

    • Click on Vector, then Canadian Geographical Names - CGN - GeoBase Series.

    • On the map, click on SK.

    • Download the file cgn_sk_shp_eng.zip (shortcut here).

    • Unzip the file.

  • Topo maps for SK, found on the GeoGratis spatial product index here.

    • Click on the Themes tab.

    • Click on Raster, then Digital Topographic Raster Maps - 1:50 000.

    • On the map, click on SK.

    • Choose a part of SK to find a topo map - for example Fond-du-Lac.

    • Download the files for Fond-du-Lac (shortcut here).

    • Unzip the file.
