Grade Level Biology

Course Overview

In Biology, students conduct laboratory and field investigations, use scientific methods during investigations, and make informed decisions using critical thinking and scientific problem solving. Students in Biology study a variety of topics that include: structures and functions of cells and viruses; growth and development of organisms; cells, tissues and organs; nucleic acids and genetics; biological evolution; taxonomy; metabolism and energy transfers in living organisms; living systems; homeostasis; and ecosystems and the environment.

Tips for Success in Biology

  • Make sure your school issued iPad is charged and ready to use each day

  • Annotate/highlight your Bio notes during lectures

  • Keep distractions (phones, games, etc.) away during class; we move quickly!

  • Ask questions if you don't understand (No one is born knowing this stuff)

  • Biology material builds upon itself; keep up with missing assignments to prevent falling behind

  • Read textbook chapters for enhanced understanding of material

Google Classroom

Westlake High School Biology students will be able to access class resources (daily objectives, class notes, assignments and textbook pages etc.) through Google Classroom. Biology students will receive a classroom code at the beginning of the year. Students should check their Biology Google Classroom daily to access class communication, submit assignments and track any missing work.

Biology Textbook

Students will have access to a digital copy of the Biology Textbook in Google Classroom. A physical textbook can be checked out upon request.

We highly recommend students read/review each chapter section during the current unit of study. This will be very helpful in achieving success in Biology throughout the year! (The textbook pages that correspond to our current unit of study can be found on each student's copy of class notes)
