Kerry Taylor currently serves as Director of Bands for Westlake High School and Fine Arts Director for Eanes ISD. Mr. Taylor is beginning 39th year as a band director in the Texas public schools; having completed five years in Katy ISD and 32 in Eanes ISD. He is currently the Music Director and Conductor of the Waterloo Wind Band, a community band in South Austin comprised of musicians aged 16-80. Mr. Taylor is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin.
Under Mr. Taylor's direction, the Westlake High School Band has been named 'Best in Class' or 'Runner-up' at numerous concert band festivals. The Westlake Band has been a Finalist in the Texas 5A and 6A State Marching Contest and at BOA Regionals and Super-Regionals. In addition, the Westlake Band has made concert tours to the Pacific Northwest, Canada and the British Isles.
During Mr. Taylor’s tenure at Westlake HS the band has received numerous awards. In 1997 the John Philip Sousa Foundation presented the Westlake Band with the Sudler Flag of Honor and in 2010 the Sudler Shield. The Westlake Wind Ensemble has performed at the 2002 and 2013 Midwest Clinic, the American Bandmasters Association and the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles. In 2003, and again on January 2, 2017, the Westlake Chaparral Band performed in the Tournament of Roses Parade in California. In 2016, the Phi Beta Mu international band fraternity honored the Westlake band with the inaugural “Program of Distinction Award.”
Mr. Taylor is active as a clinician and adjudicator in Texas and states throughout the South. He has served the Texas Music Educators Association in many positions including President of the 10,000+ member organization. His other professional memberships include Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, Phi Beta Mu, National Band Association, Phi Mu Alpha and the American Bandmasters Association. He has received the UIL “Sponsor of Excellence” Award, and the Sousa Foundation “Legion of Honor” and “Sudler Order of Merit” awards. He is currently President-Elect of the American Bandmasters Association.
