AP Precalculus centers on functions modeling dynamic phenomena. This research-based exploration of functions is designed to better prepare students for college-level calculus and provide grounding for other mathematics and science courses. In this course, students study a broad spectrum of function types that are foundational for careers in mathematics, physics, biology, health science, business, social science, and data science. Students also learn that functions and their compositions, inverses, and transformations are understood through graphical, numerical, analytical, and verbal representations, which reveal different attributes of the functions and are useful for solving problems in mathematical and applied contexts. AP Precalculus is designed to be the equivalent of a first semester college precalculus course. AP Precalculus provides students with an understanding of the concepts of college algebra, trigonometry, and additional topics that prepare students for further college-Level mathematics courses. This course explores a variety of function types and their applications—polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, polar, parametric, and vector-valued functions. Students will earn 1 semester credit for Precalculus through the AP exam in May. AP Exam is scheduled for May 12th.
Westlake High School utilizes the Google Classroom platform to share classroom resources, many assignments, and assessment preparation materials to students. Students will receive a classroom code to access these materials, submit assignments, and track any missing work. Within the google classroom there will be a link to a google drive that contains all blank and completed notes, homework practice sets, and videos.
Students will have access to recordings of the daily lessons in their google drive. Videos are notability files and must be watched on the notability app which is available on student devices and available for purchase on personal devices.

Daily 10%
Checks for Understanding, Class Discussions/Activities, Warm-Ups/Exit Tickets. Students should expect practice sets to be given daily. Total of 3-5 hours weekly.
Quizzes 20%
At least 3 quizzes will be given each 9-week grading period. Quizzes may be in the format of individual or group quizzes.
Tests 70%
At least 3 tests will be given each 9-week period. In addition to unit tests, a Quarter Final will be taken at the end of each quarter that is comprehensive of the course to date.
**All assessments (quizzes, tests) will include spiraled content from previous units.
Re-Testing
Students will be offered the opportunity to retake 1 test for up to an 80 each quarter. Retest must be done on the student’s own time during the retest window. Prior to retaking the exam students must submit all completed practice to their teacher.
Make-up Policy
If you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to make up work you missed. All assignments are posted in Google Classroom and you will have a 9 week calendar that gives plenty of warning for important dates. Please follow the absence policy in the student handbook regarding quiz and test makeups.
Test Security
The Westlake Math Department policy is not to release tests, and students may not make copies — written or digital — of any exam material. Students will have the opportunity to review their completed exams during class or in other teacher-supervised settings. The reason for this policy is to prevent anyone from gaining an unfair advantage, because students deserve an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities on a level playing field.
Level Changes
Students can change levels in a course by doing a schedule change request with their counselor until September 24th. Please talk with your teacher prior to making this decision.
*After September 24th students may not change levels in a course until the semester break.*
