Course Description:

Anatomy & Physiology will focus on enabling students to develop an understanding of the relationships between the structures and functions of the human body. This course involves the study of the structure of the human body including a gross and microscopic study of cells, tissues, and organ systems listed in the course content.  All major human organ systems are completed by the end of the spring semester. Students will learn the mechanisms for maintaining homeostasis within the human body. This course will involve laboratory activities, projects, dissections, textbook material, models, diagrams, current events, and clinical studies. This is a fast paced and rigorous science course requiring individual discipline to study and learn. Students will be expected to study daily without being asked in order to be able to keep up. Students signed up for this course should have passed biology with a proficient score (80 or higher). This course builds on most topics covered during biology during the 9th grade year; those topics will only be briefly reviewed.

**Adjustments will be made to the sequence of course content as deemed necessary

Textbook: Human Anatomy & Physiology, 9thedition (Marieb)

*the district provides a digital version of our textbook for home use.  We have a class set of 30 books to be used in class.  Many students purchase their own copy of the textbook via amazon.  Used copies are generally between $30.00-$50.00 (sometimes much less).

Materials (optional):

Students are free to use whatever they like to keep their anatomy work together (folders, notebook, 3-ring binder, etc…).  General school supplies will be utilized (pencils, pens, colored pencils, paper, etc…). Many students find “The Anatomy Coloring Book” very helpful.  This is an optional supplemental material.  Can be purchased on Amazon or at Barnes & Nobles bookstore.

Course Objectives:

1.     The student will develop a functional knowledge of the basic nomenclature and conventions used to study human anatomy, review the fundamentals of cell biology and selected tissues of the body.

2.     The student will be able display knowledge of the relative positions and functions of the major body organs as well as their general anatomical locations for the body systems covered in Human Anatomy.

3.     The student will be able to name the anatomical structures associated with all body systems.

4.     The student will be able to clearly define the reproductive cycle as it relates to human reproduction.

5.     The student will be able to explain the major developmental events that occur during the embryonic period.

6.     The student will be able to describe the various types of bones, joints and joint movement, differentiate between fracture types, and order the steps of fracture repair.

7.     The student will be able to identify the anatomy of the heart, blood and lymph vessels as they relate to adult and fetal circulation.

8.     The student will be able to locate the structures associated with the brain and spinal cord.

9.     The student will be able to list the name and function of all digestive system organs in the alimentary canal as well as accessory digestive organs

10.  The student will be able to identify the 3 major muscle types and approximately 100 skeletal muscles with their origin, insertion, and action.

***specific learning targets will be distributed before each unit begins***

Course Procedures:

Lectures and activities will emphasize topics related to human anatomy and physiology. Students will be required to participate in lectures and all activities. Students are required to read current events and medical articles. Class time will be used to reinforce concepts through discussion, labs and research. Tests will include all materials discussed or assigned both in and out of class. Quizzes will be used to prepare students for the test.

Grading Procedures:

Exams/Major Projects/Lab Practicals = 60%

Quizzes/Labs= 30%

Practices = 10%

Practices (10%)-->Quizzes/Labs (30%)-->Written Exams (60%)

**Grades on future assessments that are greater than previous assessments on the same material will be replaced with the higher grade

Retesting: Students who make below a 70% on an exam may retest AFTER a conference with the teacher.  After the retest, students can make up to a 70% (mastery).  The retest will be in a mutually agreed upon format between the teacher/student.  Some retests may consist of retaking the entire exam while other retests may consist of just certain objectives/standards. All retests will take place within 5 school days from receiving the grade.
