Course Description
This course includes the concepts of geometric thinking, spatial reasoning, and geometric figures, as well as the relationship between geometry and other mathematics. This course will include the use of technology as a tool for solving meaningful problems.
1st Quarter—Lines, Angles, Planes, Logic, and Proofs
2nd Quarter—Triangle Centers, Polygons, and Quadrilaterals
3rd Quarter—Circles, Triangular Similarity, and Right Triangle Trigonometry
4th Quarter—Measuring 2-D and 3-D Figures, Transformations, and Geometric Probability
Grading Policy
Your quarterly grade will be calculated with the following weights:
Homework/Daily Grades—20%
o Practice (“Homework”) will be assigned daily and should take no more than 30 minutes to complete. Students will have the opportunity each day to begin their practice after each lesson.
o All homework assigned before each quiz will be due the day before the quiz; late work will be accepted with a maximum grade of 70 and must be turned in before the next unit’s first quiz.
Quizzes—20%
o 2 quizzes will be given before each unit test to check student’s understanding and learning (about one quiz per week—check the class calendar for an updated curriculum schedule).
o Students cannot retake quizzes. However, one quiz grade may be replaced by the unit test score if it is higher.
Tests—60%
o A test will be given at the end of each unit (about 1 test every 2-3 weeks—check the class calendar for an updated curriculum schedule).
o Students are allowed to retake a test; however, the highest grade a student can receive on a re-test is 80%. Retakes must be completed before the next unit test.
Your semester average is the average of the two quarterly grades (40% each) and the semester exam (20%).
Make Up Work
Students who are absent from class are responsible for checking Google Classroom the following day to find missed assignments and notes. Digital resources will be linked in Google Classroom. Assignments that were due on the day of a student’s absence should be turned in immediately upon the student’s return. Students who need to make up a test or quiz should plan to do so outside of class in the Testing Center. Students that are excused from class by extracurricular activities are highly recommended to complete work prior to absence.
Technology Resources
Google Classroom is where all communication in the class will take place. Blank notes, completed notes, announcements, and homework links will all be posted through Google Classroom. If you are absent or happen to lose your notes, everything will be posted on Google Classroom.
Electronic Devices
iPads will be used for several interactive applications; therefore, students are required to bring their iPad to class every day. The iPad will be used for instructional purposes only. Students are not permitted to play games and listen to music on their iPad during class time.
Any other electronic device (including cellphones) will NOT be permitted.
Academic Integrity
Academic dishonesty includes cheating or copying the work of another student, plagiarism, and unauthorized communication between students during an examination. Failure to follow this policy will be dealt with on an individual basis and could result in receiving a zero or office referral.
Policy of AI:
Students are permitted to utilize AI tools for assistance on homework assignments; however, it is advisable to exercise independent problem-solving skills whenever possible. While AI usage is not prohibited on homework, it is recommended primarily for situations where students find themselves genuinely stuck and unable to make progress. The goal of this policy is to promote active engagement with mathematical concepts, fostering a deeper understanding and proficiency in the subject matter.
Test Security:
The Westlake Math Department policy is to not release tests, and students may not make copies, written or digital, of any exam material. Students will have the opportunity to review their completed exams during class or in other teacher-supervised settings. The reason for this policy is to prevent anyone from gaining an unfair advantage, because students deserve an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities on a level playing field.
Westlake High School utilizes the Google Classroom platform to share classroom resources, many assignments, and assessment preparation materials to students. WHS students will receive a classroom code to access these materials, submit assignments, and track any missing work.
